You’re the Family Photographer
As moms, we take on a lot of roles. Nanny, housekeeper, chef, accountant, and on and on. One of the biggest roles we play is of photographer. Check your phone right now and see how many pictures you have of your kids and of your kids and their dad. I have 900 in one album that I haven’t updated in a solid year, so it’s probably more like 2000. Now how many pictures do you have of you and your kids? Check your husband’s phone, too. Yeah, I got 10, and they’re all selfies. That’s not good enough! Let’s be honest, most moms do the lion’s share of the parenting, but dads get all the recognition. Everyone deserves to be recognized for how hard it is to be a parent, but especially moms. We baked the little monsters after all, we deserve beautiful photos, dammit!
Celebrate Your Bond
Remember when your baby was an actual baby and for the first 6 months or so they would smile at your whenever you smiled at them? That’s my favorite phase. My son was only like that with one other person, his great grandmother. She passed away in March of last year after congestive heart failure, and believe me, I took as many pictures of them together as I could. Bonds should be celebrated and documented for a lifetime. So even during family sessions, I try my best to get as many images of just mom and kids as I can, because I know they come few and far between.
Make Some Memories
A mommy and me session is a great excuse to spend a whole day focused on your kiddo. I don’t know about yours, but my kid’s love language is definitely quality time. He says, “I just want you to be with me” five or six times a day. So make a day of it! Go to Starbucks, get sugary drinks, come play dress up, and take some beautiful pictures. I don’t often promise my clients things, but I can promise you that you will never regret a Mommy & Me session. My mom and I got professional photos taken when I was in high school and I still have it on my desk nearly 20 years later. Memories are important, photographs are important. Take the time to show your child how much they mean to you and give them a memory to treasure for a lifetime.
Check out these gorgeous Mommy & Me sessions from some of my friends–Vanessa’s fine art session and Leslie’s lifestyle session are great examples of two different directions to go in!
